Dear Kitty,

I'll sort of give you some background information. I have 2 kids - J. is turning 3 at the end of July, and M. is 10 months old. J. still sleeps in a crib, and uses a pacifier only for nap time and bedtime in her crib only. (On top of that she's not toilet trained - but that's a whole other story!) We've had her "big girl bed" in her room for the last year since her sister was born...just to read books in it so she'd get comfortable with it, but have never pushed her to sleep in it. A few weeks ago she wanted to start sleeping with a blanket instead of her sleep sack, and tonight for the first time she asked for a pillow. Both of which we did when she asked.

I am pleased to announce that parents are now able to purchase and download a condensed version of each of my Sleep Seminars. These have been created to address some long-standing requests from out-of-towners who can't make a Calgary seminar; I think these videos will also be helpful to Calgary parents who find it difficult to attend a seminar together or on a specific date.

"The findings from the related Sleep in America poll of sleep practices of children from birth to age 10 and their caregivers clearly noted that sleep problems are highly prevalent, and that they have a negative impact on children and their families. Education is the key not only to the treatment of existing sleep disturbances, but more importantly, for the prevention of sleep problems and the development of best sleep practices. These education efforts clearly go beyond parents to our educational systems and to health-care practitioners."

I've just finished listening to Part 1 and Part 2 of The Hurried Infant. I think it's an outstanding program and I urge you to find the time to listen. Much of the philosophy behind what I've been teaching for over 25 years is based on the type of research this program tells us about. Turns out it's not just babies who are being hurried -- babies these days have very hurried parents.

I'm remembering a question that was raised at a recent Sleep from the Start prenatal seminar: "When I lay my baby in her crib - awake - and trust her to get herself to sleep without rocking her or feeding her to sleep, is there anything I can safely put into the crib to help her with self-calming?."

My answer was "Yes", and I want to share some ideas with you.

Once a pregnancy is confirmed, many parents-to-be expect to have an easy entry into what they might think of as the Parenting Club. Lots of their friends already have children and now there should be so much to talk about together!

Sadly, they may be disappointed. Many parents find that instead of one large, supportive Club, as they expected, there are dozens of small, exclusive, narrowly focused "clubs", some with daunting membership requirements.

My little boy is 3 years old and always seems to need me to play with him. When I tell him I'm tired of playing or have work to do, he just follows me around the house, whining and asking over and over. I think I play quite a lot with him so it's not as if I ignore him all the time. Of course it makes me feel guilty when I keep saying no, so usually I finally give in. Is there a way I can teach him that he has to play alone sometimes?
