5 Tips for Toilet Learning

Tip #1 Expect your child to be able to use the potty reliably (independently) by age 3.5 years. Research shows this age is the new "normal."
Tip #2 Be respectful of the fact that this is your child's body (not yours) and kids this age need time to become comfortable with new skills and expectations.
Tip #3 Remember how young children learn best: by watching you, not by being taught or "trained."
Tip #4 Resist reading parenting books on this subject - each one gives different advice. Instead, buy a few potty books for your child and read them frequently (with no strings attached!)
Tip #5 Be aware that most children show a spike of temporary interest around 19-21 months - which will quickly be replaced by other interests and should not be taken as a sign of "readiness."

For my older two children the advice/program Kitty has for potty training worked for one child within 2 days and the other within 5 days. Each of those times they had “successes” on the first day so they quickly understood our smartie reward system. I started training my now 3 year old and for the past 3 days have had NO successes. I know it takes time, but without any successes my daughter only cries for her smarties rather than understands the reward system. I’m keeping it low key so it remains no big deal for her, but have any of you parents out there had a similar experience and how did you handle it?

My two older kids very quickly learned to use the potty using Kitty’s toilet learning techniques (one within 2 days and the other at 5). We started my 3 year old learning to potty train using the same techniques this past Sunday. We have had NO successes along the way so she doesn’t grasp the reward system. She just cries because she can see the box of smarties but she hasn’t gotten one yet. Since it’s been 5 days, and not once has she gone on the potty, should I stop and wait a while or keep going?
