On My Way Home

Many of you know I've been away for the month of October. Time spent in London, Denmark, Germany and France has given me lots of opportunity to observe families...especially since we unwittingly managed to hit four weeks of school holidays - one for each country! While this meant many more tourists to contend with, it also meant watching family patterns of interaction on trains, streets and in museums. Some things are the same the "world" over, such as shopping as the main source of entertainment. Here in Paris, it seemed half the tourist bus emptied out at the Champs-Elysees. This was many more than at any of the museum sites. However, inside the museums we toured we saw hundreds of families with very patient and sometimes very interested young children, strolling past the famous paintings and sculptures. Then on that same bus ride we heard and saw a set of children who were loud, yelling at their parents, showing off and the reaction from the parents was rolicking laughter. Later on the Metro a child got loud for a moment and his mother gave a quick "shhh!" and he immediately quieted down and made his statement just to her rather than the whole car.
Obviously, parenting skills vary in Europe as much as in North America. I'ts been a fascinating trip and when I wasn't watching families, we've partaken liberally of the wines, foods and as far as we could, we've tried to learn and fit in with each country and it's culture. Still, here in Paris, we are inevitably handed the Anglais menu as we walk in...which is very fortunate for us, but shows that you can't fully adapt to the culture of a new country, in one week.
